The Ultimate Guide to Building a Private Cloud Server with OpenMediaVault

The Ultimate Guide to Building a Private Cloud Server with OpenMediaVault

Introduction

Tired of relying on third-party cloud services for your agency’s storage, backup, or collaboration needs? Want more control, privacy, and savings? Setting up your own private cloud server using OpenMediaVault (OMV) is the answer.

This guide walks you through how to configure an in-house cloud solution tailored for your web design and development agency, giving you control over assets, backups, and client deliverables—all while keeping costs minimal.

Why Choose OpenMediaVault?

OpenMediaVault is a free, open-source NAS (Network Attached Storage) solution based on Debian Linux. It’s perfect for web development teams who want secure local or remote access to project files, assets, code repositories, and backups.

Key Benefits for Agencies:

  • Full control over data & access
  • Easy file sharing across the team
  • Automated backup of client work
  • Scalable as your agency grows
  • Can run Docker & web-based apps (like Git, Nextcloud, etc.)

What You’ll Need

Before we get started, gather these components:

✅ Hardware:

  • Old or spare PC/server (recommended: dual-core CPU, 4GB+ RAM, 1TB+ HDD/SSD)
  • USB stick (at least 4GB) for booting OMV
  • Ethernet cable and access to router/switch

✅ Software:

  • OpenMediaVault ISO
  • Rufus (to create a bootable USB)
  • Another PC to access the OMV web interface

Step 1: Prepare the Bootable Drive

  1. Download OMV ISO Head to the official OpenMediaVault site and download the latest ISO file.
  2. Create Bootable USB with Rufus
    • Insert your USB stick.
    • Open Rufus, select your ISO and USB.
    • Choose GPT partition, FAT32 format, and click “Start”.
  3. Plug into Your NAS Machine Insert the bootable USB into the target PC/server.

Step 2: Install OpenMediaVault

  1. Boot into the USB on your NAS machine.
  2. Select Install OMV and follow on-screen prompts.
  3. During installation:
    • Set hostname (e.g., hrwason-nas)
    • Create a root password (keep it secure)
  4. Once installed, remove the USB and reboot.

Step 3: Access OMV Web Interface

  1. On another computer, open a browser and enter the IP address shown on your OMV machine screen (e.g., http://192.168.1.45).
  2. Log in using:
    • Username: admin
    • Password: openmediavault
  3. Change the password after the first login.

Step 4: Set Up Storage & Shared Folders

  1. Go to Storage > File Systems
    • Mount your hard drive (if not auto-mounted).
  2. Navigate to Access Rights Management > Shared Folders
    • Create folders like Projects, Clients, Backups, etc.
  3. Set user permissions for each folder.

Step 5: Configure SMB or FTP for File Access

  • Go to Services > SMB/CIFS
    • Enable and configure file sharing.
  • OR go to Services > FTP
    • Enable FTP if your team prefers.

Now your agency files are easily accessible over the network!

Step 6: Add Users & Control Access

  1. Head to Access Rights Management > Users
  2. Create accounts for your team members.
  3. Assign group rights and folder access.

This allows safe, segmented access across different teams like design, dev, and admin.

Step 7: Optional – Install Plugins for More Power

OpenMediaVault has powerful plugins to supercharge your agency workflow:

  • Docker – Run WordPress, Git, or web apps
  • Nextcloud – Private cloud interface with file sharing and calendar
  • rsync – For automated backups
  • Remote Mount – Sync with existing drives or cloud providers
